I hate politics
And despite my dad's blog and numerous references I've seen all over to "Ron Paul" I didn't bother (I sort of suspected he'd be a "Taxpayer Party" candidate or something like that). I had a spare minute after one of my classes this week and a student asked me to look up a Ron Paul video--so I did. It was fatal--I might end up voting principles with hope this cycle, and I have to admit it's been a while. Is Ron Paul a perfect candidate? No, I'm not super comfy with all his libertarian views, but there are three things that stand out to me:
1. He's Pro-Life
2. He's honest (How can you tell? Because he sure isn't saying things that are calculated to gain a politician respect and popularity, and because his public life is consistent with his positions.)
3. His solutions are simple, principled, and crazy!
GO, RON PAUL!

The Road to Wisdom
The road to wisdom?
Well, it's plain and simple to express:
Err
and err
and err again,
but less
and less
and less.
Problems
Problems worthy of attack
prove their worth by hitting back.

A Breakfast Grook
O Toast! What an exquisite yearning
Thy sounds and thy odors convey!
O fragrant aroma of burning!
O rhythmical scraping away!

Another Plug for Jamie Soles
It's been said before but is worth saying again: if you have children, if your children like music, and if your cd player works, you really should start a collection of Jamie Soles' music--now available from Brightrock Press.
Despite his bouncy, kid-friendly sound, Mr. Soles' candid storytelling, his dry (dare we say it? Canadian?) sense of humor, and the way he pairs his words and music seem to result in three things per album. One, music kids will love. If they're your kids, you will like how sweetly they slide out of their post-nap crankiness as they listen; at our house it's almost instantaneous. Two, on every album at least one song that, as soon as you pay attention to the words, sends shivers down your spine. My personal nominee for this category from our newest album, Fun and Prophets, is "Run, Prophet, Run," although the song about the forty-two youths who got mauled by bears while razzing a prophet is certainly a close second. Three, on every album at least one song that can make Mommy cry when she's feeling hormonal. Really, try it. We promise you'll like it.

A Day Late
We had friends staying with us this past week. Here are the kids waiting eagerly for their arrival on Tuesday.
Nelly and her friend London, settled right into reading books together.
And here are Lewis and Liev, and Inge and Payton.
Lewis and Liev are almost the same age. Louie is pretty tall!
When everyone else is tired of getting their picture taken you can always take your own picture.
Someone, and it wasn't a child, ahem, spilled cheerios all over the floor and all over Lucius.
Don't tell anyone, but this was a fun way to have a snack...
Lucius and Mona didn't exactly play together, but they shared some of the same toys, at least.
Amos and Boris is an excellent children's story by William Steig. Get some Steig, you won't regret it.

Another Simonne in the family
We are so very happy to welcome a new little relation into the family--the first girl cousin, and Jak's little sister. Simonne Genevieve Alethea Roise can be seen here.
For those who may be wondering, Simone was not a family name before this generation of Roises, but--speaking for ourselves--Peter and I loved it for its meaning, which is from the same root as shema, and means to listen intently. A good name for a little person, as I'm sure most parents would be inclined to agree. (n.b., Simonne Genevieve is spelled with two n's; Claire Simone with only one.)
